Partial Derivatives
When taking the derivative of functions with multiple variable then we take a partial derivative. There is one derivative for each variable. In case of there will be 2 partial derivatives. In case of there will be 5 partial derivatives.
For each variable we derive the function considering only this one variable. The other variables are all treated as constants (if you are lucky most of them just fall away).

But why bother?
- each of the variables has a separate convexity/concavity
- imagine a hilly landscape, you are south of a hill peak (2 variables x,y)
- going either west or east will have little incline
- imagine a serpentine road, going left/right to have a less steep incline
- going either north or south will have steep incline
- imagine beyond the guard rails of the serpentine road…, going straight down/up
- partial derivatives is about finding out which way is which, down the serpentine road or straight down/up
- then one can analyse where to go
- e.g. during maximization/minimization problems you want to reach a peak/valley as fast as possible, so you would jump off all the guard rails instead of taking the serpentine road

Caviat in-between
It is possible for a function to increase along the x-axis and along the y-axis, but not along a combination of both an increase in x and y.
Therefore the concavity or convexity is not given, since also any combination of increases of x and y need to be concave/convex.
